Jeremy Shaw: Guitar
Jeremy
Shaw was born in Utica, New York. He spent his early childhood living
on a communal farm near the village of Boonville in rural upstate New
York with his parents and other close families and friends. Love of music
was a central theme in the extended farm family. There was a house band
that played old time and folk music on guitar, violin, banjo, mandolin,
washtub bass, autoharp, pennywhistle, and spoons. Jeremy's mother played
guitar and banjo and sang. His dad played violin and mandolin. They played
music together for fun at home and for beers at the local country bars.
Jeremy went to countless
festivals and concerts with his parents and their friends while growing
up. During the holidays, the family would organize a choral group directed
by his aunt, who was also his first music teacher on piano and French
horn.
In the late 1970's, Jeremy's
father moved to the Triangle area in North Carolina. Jeremy split his
teen years between upstate New York and North Carolina. He began playing
guitar at age twelve while living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
During high school, Jeremy
heard about the Berklee College of Music, which offered classes in contemporary
guitar and music techniques. After finishing high school, he took a year
off, then moved to Boston to study at Berklee. There he completed a dual
major in composition and performance. During this time, Jeremy performed
and recorded "Constructing Scenes from Memory"(1991) with prog rock band
Raymaker.
His
next several years were spent in Boston, gigging and writing music for
various projects. Neptune Ensemble soon became his main focus. This group
was the host band for numerous basement jams at Neptune, the house where
Jeremy and six other musicians lived. The band evolved into a trio, consisting
of bassist Jon Robinson, drummer Marc Gratama, and Jeremy on guitar and
vocals. They performed throughout the northeast, and released "Live at
the Wharf"(1997) and "Neptune Ensemble"(1999).
After almost a decade in Boston,
Jeremy now resides in Charlotte, NC where he teaches, performs and writes
music.
